Prominent Ear Operation

What is the prominent ear?

There are basically two pathologies in the prominent ear:

  1. Folds that should be in the earlobe have not been formed and the ear is flat. This causes ears to appear larger than they are.
  2. The angle between the ear and the head is increased.

Is there an age limit for prominent ear surgery?

Prominent ear surgery can be done easily from the age of 6 when the ear development is completed. It would be good to be performed especially before school age in order to prevent children to be psychologically affected by having a prominent ear. However, it should be clearly explained to the child and s/he should be informed about the process. After 40 years of age on average, as in other parts of the body, the cartilage tissue in ears begin to become harder. It would be more difficult to shape the hardened cartilage. For this reason, it is better to perform the prominent ear surgery as much as earlier after the age of 6.

What is done during the surgery?

With the most modern technique, an incision is made as hidden behind the ear in the folding area while shaping the earlobe. The subcutaneous tissue and ear cartilage membrane are striped, the angle between the earlobe and head is narrowed by stitches, the outer ear fold is formed with stitches again, the striped cartilage membrane and subcutaneous tissue are fixated to protect the form of the ear. The entire suture line on the skin remains hidden behind the ear. The earlobe can be reduced in size during the same operation if it is too large.

The operation can be performed under general or local anaesthesia. It takes 1.5 hours on average.

How is the post-operative period?

There may be pain and tingling for the first 6 hours after the operation. But it is a pain that can be easily controlled with painkillers. You will come out of the surgery with a bandage that puts light pressure on your ears. This is necessary to reduce the swelling on ears. Because if the swelling increases, you will feel more pain and pressure in your ears. I will replace this bandage with a tennis band on the 3rd day. It is necessary to use this band until your tissues are healed in the early stages. It will be very good if you can use it day and night for 2 weeks. I advise you not to lie on your ears for 2 months.

Your ears may seem very adherent in the early postoperative period. However, they will have a natural appearance by opening 2-3 mm after about 2 months.

The most common complication of the prominent ear operation is that ears might get the ‘prominent ear shape’ again. This may happen due to the fact that the ear cartilage is very resistant, the patient is older, s/he does not pay attention in the early period care and has not been properly intervened. With the latest technique, this situation is almost absent.
